The Biology and the Built Environment (BioBE) Center’s interdisciplinary team of architects, engineers and microbiologists has expertise in building performance, energy efficiency, and indoor environmental quality. Together with the Energy Studies in Buildings Laboratory (ESBL), we have launched the Institute for Health in the Built Environment, a collaboration with multiple academic institutions, centers, and labs in collaboration with private industry, philanthropic organizations, and government agencies to reduce energy consumption of buildings and improve the health and well-being of building inhabitants.

Position Summary
The Biology and Built Environment Center (BioBE Center) invites applications for a full-time Microbiology Lab Technician to manage laboratory work in the wet lab in the area of microbial ecology. Under the supervision of the Director of the BioBE Center, the Technician serves as the primary laboratory coordinator for BioBE’s research within the Institute for Health in the Built Environment. The Technician is responsible for conducting laboratory experiments and some computer-based analysis, including but not limited to nucleic acid extraction, PCR, quantitative real-time PCR, sequencing library preparation, coordinating with sequencing facilities, culturing, bioinformatics and phylogenetic analysis.
The Technician will have primary oversight of all lab activity, including organization and documentation, safety training, coordinating lab activities, and inventory. The Technician will also be responsible for supporting BioBE researchers and other independent research on the microbiology of the built environment, including supporting work on experimental design, laboratory and field work, some data analysis as needed, and article preparation. Laboratory support will comprise approximately 90% of the Technician’s tasks. The Technician may also organize and train student workers in the lab as needed.
Minimum Requirements
• A bachelor’s degree in biology, microbiology, molecular genetics, or related field.
• Two years of direct experience using molecular techniques, including some combination of skills in DNA/RNA extraction, PCR, next-generation sequencing, and culturing microbial specimens.
• Direct experience managing a laboratory, caring for lab equipment, and carrying out research.
• Experience working as part of a laboratory group or team, in a team atmosphere.

• Demonstrated overall commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity including the ability to communicate and work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and cultures.
Preferred Qualifications
• A master’s degree in biology, microbiology, molecular genetics, or related field.
• Experience in bioinformatics and phylogenetic analysis.
• Experience supervising student workers.
