The Energy Studies in Buildings Laboratory (ESBL) and the Biology and the Built Environment (BioBE) Center’s interdisciplinary team has expertise in building performance, energy efficiency, and indoor environmental quality. Together, we have launched the Health + Energy Research Consortium, a collaboration with industry to reduce energy consumption and improve the health and well-being of building inhabitants.

Position Summary
The Biology and Built Environment Center invites applications for a full-time Post-Doctoral Scholar to head the Green Lab around work in the area of microbial ecology. Under the direction of the Director of the Energy Studies in Buildings Laboratory, the Scholar serves as the primary laboratory coordinator for the Biology and the Built Environment Center’s research. The Scholar is responsible for conducting laboratory experiments and analysis, including but not limited to genetic extraction and sequencing, microbial analysis, culturing, bioinformatics and phylogenetic analysis.

The Scholar will have primary oversight of all lab activity, as well as being responsible for organizing research support for the four researchers in the BioBE unit. The Scholar will also be responsible for independent research on the microbiology of the built environment, including collaborative pursuits of external funding, experimental design, laboratory and field work, data analysis, and article publication. Independent research is expected to be 70% or more of position effort, and laboratory support will comprise the remainder. The Scholar may also organize student workers at need.

Minimum Requirements
• A doctoral degree in biology, architecture, or related field, from an accredited institution of higher education.
• Two years of direct experience using molecular techniques, including some combination of skills in DNA/RNA extraction, PCR, cloning, next-generation DNA sequencing, bioinformatics, and phylogenetic analysis, and culturing specimens.
• Experience working as part of a laboratory group or team, in a team atmosphere

• Excellent oral and written communication skills; attention to detail.
• Demonstrated organizational, problem-solving, project management, and time management skills.
• Demonstrated overall commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity including the ability to communicate and work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and cultures.

Preferred Qualifications
• Direct experience managing a laboratory, caring for lab equipment, and carrying our research.
• Experience supervising student workers.
